Grants: The Nitty Gritty

Grants are non-transferable.

A grant selectee who does not receive grant funds due to failure to meet the deadline CAN reapply for a grant during the next grant cycle. (previously a two cycle wait)

When grants require proof of residency for a qualifying location - Any one of the following is acceptable:

Driver's license, utility bill, lease agreement, mortgage statement, bank statement, etc

Genderbands recommends grant applicants schedule surgery no sooner than March if they intend to use grant funds for surgery. Grants cannot be used retroactively for past procedures.

Social transition grant recipients are disqualified from applying for medical or surgical grants for one complete grant cycle after funds are dispersed, but may apply in subsequent cycles.

Medical or surgical grant recipients are disqualified from applying for social transition grants for one complete grant cycle after funds are dispersed, but may apply in subsequent cycles.

Applicants can apply for multiple grants (all applicable) but can only receive one grant per grant cycle.
​

Applicants who submit more than one application for a single grant are disqualified from being selected for that grant. They may still apply and qualify for other grants.

Current board members, titled volunteers, paid employees, and their immediate family members are disqualified from applying for grants.

Past staff must wait two grant cycles after leaving the above mentioned Genderbands roles before applying for grants.

Medical grant recipients are disqualified from applying for all future Genderbands medical grants.
​

Surgical grant recipients are disqualified from applying for all future Genderbands surgical grants.
​

Social transition grant recipients are disqualified from applying for all future Genderbands social transition grants.

Grant funds will not be disbursed for prerequisite treatments in preparation for gender-affirming surgery, income reimbursement for time off work, surgical aftercare supplies, medications or treatments. Other expenses may also be excluded.

Grant selectees are picked by random selection.
​​

Medical and surgical Genderbands grants, unless specified otherwise, are paid directly to the medical or surgical care provider.

Grants are now open to ALL transition-related procedures!
​

New application dates! October 1 through November 30. Grants are awarded early the following year (usually around late February).

Applicants must be on the transgender/non-binary spectrum.
​

Applicants must reside in the US, US territories, Canada, or Mexico.
​

​Applicants for surgical or medical procedures can be under 18 at the time of application BUT must be 18 or older at the time of receiving surgical or medical procedures.

Non-surgical and non-medical grants are available to those under 18 years old (with parental/guardian consent).
​

Grant selectees must use the grant within the calendar year it was awarded.
​

Surgical and medical grants must be used in the United States.
​

A therapist's or doctor's letter is required for surgical and medical grants before funds can be dispersed (a federal requirement).​

In addition to surgery, covered expenses may include anesthesia, hospital fees, medications administered by the surgical facility as part of the surgical process, and pathology fees.
Travel
Travel grant funds may be used for expenses related to travel for gender-affirming healthcare for the patient and/or travel for one caregiver.
Qualifying expenses related to travel for any gender-affirming surgery include but are not limited to:
Airfare
Hotel
Car rental
*Meals during travel are not a qualifying expense.
Grants for Youth
Grants available to applicants under 18 years old (with parental or guardian consent):
Gender-affirming clothing
Gender-affirming haircuts
Name change
Gender-marker change
Corrected vital records
Travel for gender-affirming healthcare
*Travel grants for youth may be used for any gender-affirming medical or surgical healthcare, including but not limited to puberty blockers and/or HRT.
